 UCONN DAIRY BAR - 7 Stars *******

On Wednesday, September 2, the Community Exploration class went to the UConn Dairy Bar to participate in a tour, and to sample the ice cream. It was a perfect day to eat ice cream because the weather was hot and sunny. Walking to the Dairy Bar took about twenty minutes. Even though it was hot, it was a nice, leisurely walk, and we enjoyed talking with each other along the way.

When we arrived, the tour guide was scooping ice cream and we had to wait a few minutes for her to finish. When she finished, she greeted us and led us to the window of the production room. She then explained how ice cream is made, and pointed out the different machines that are used in making ice cream. By that time, the Dairy Bar had finished with ice cream production for the day, and the workers were cleaning the production room.

We learned that the Dairy Bar produces twenty-eight flavors of ice cream. They also make yogurt and cheese.

Our guide spoke of a freezer that freezes the ice cream to forty degrees Fahrenheit below zero. We wanted to go into the freezer, to feel what a Connecticut winter day might feel like. Our guide said that because the floor outside the freezer was wet, we could not go into the freezer. If we had gone in, our shoes would have frozen to the floor of the freezer and we would have been stuck! Brrrr…

After the tour, we went back into the shop and many students ate ice cream. Some students sampled different flavors before ordering, because they were unsure of the taste of some of the flavors. Most students got one scoop of ice cream and some got sprinkles on top of their ice cream. Some of the flavors that were chosen were: chocolate, toasted almond amaretto, banana chocolate chip, strawberry, pistachio, cookies and cream, vanilla, and mint chocolate chip. One student got a milkshake and was very happy with it.

Overall, the trip to the Dairy Bar was a successful, enjoyable trip.
